What to know before you buy
1MIG First, Then TIG
MIG welding is the easiest process to learn β start here. TIG produces cleaner welds but requires both hands and a foot pedal, making it best for intermediate welders.
2Input Power Matters
110V/120V welders run on household outlets but are limited to thinner steel (up to ~3/16"). 220V/240V machines handle thicker material and duty cycles suitable for production work.
3Auto-Darkening Helmets Are Worth It
A fixed-shade helmet ($20) works but forces you to flip it up between welds. An auto-darkening helmet ($80β250) boosts productivity and reduces neck strain significantly.
4Match Wire to Material
ER70S-6 wire covers most mild steel MIG work. 308L and 309L are for stainless. 4043 and 5356 for aluminum. Using the wrong filler creates weak, porous welds.
